7. Cut Off the Root Last

The root end of the onion contains the highest concentration of sulfur compounds. By cutting off the root end last, you can minimize the release of these compounds and reduce your chances of tearing up.

Start by slicing off the top of the onion, then cut it in half and peel off the skin. Finally, make your slices, saving the root end for last.
